  93. By virtue of trade agreements between the US and Japan, it is illegal in the US
  94. to distribute copies of anime and anime-related material without having
  95. permission from the copyright holder, regardless of whether or not any fee is
  96. charged.  This includes all anime features, official or fan-generated scripts
  97. for these features and illustrations featuring the likenesses of the characters
  98. appearing in these features (as in GIF files).
  99.  
  100. Copyrights are intended to make sure that the author of the work receives
  101. appropriate compensation for his/her job.  Some people consider the copying of
  102. anime a morally corrupt practice, as the author of the work is not being paid.
  103. There have been several counter-arguments to this by anime fans, such as:
  104.  
  105.   - It is unlikely that the Japanese companies will sue the fan, as this
  106.     practice creates a demand for other anime-related products, which increases
  107.     their sales.
  108.  
  109.   - The fan is against profiting from this activity, and in some cases even
  110.     boycotts and denounces any people who are doing it for profit.
  111.  
  112.   - These features are far too expensive/hard-to-find for the fan to acquire
  113.     them by other means.
  114.  
  115. Regardless of any moral or economical justifications, the fact is that copying
  116. of anime features is illegal under US law.  If the fan resorts to this method
  117. to obtain anime material, he/she should be aware of this.

  617. Let's say that geeker@pac.man.edu wants to get the latest and greatest
  618. Ranma-chan GIF (/anime/hentai/r-chan1.gif) from happosai.com.
  619. - At the Unix prompt, geeker types "ftp happosai.com".
  620. - At the "login:" prompt, he types "anonymous".
  621. - At the "Password:" prompt, he types "geeker@pac.man.edu".  He's now logged
  622.   at happosai.com.
  623. - geeker now uses cd(1) and ls(1) just like in Unix to find whatever he's after.
  624.  
  625. If geeker want to get the Ranma-chan GIF, he must do the following:
  626. - He uses cd(1) to go to /anime/hentai.  Once there, he uses ls(1) to make sure
  627.   that r-chan1.gif is actually there.
  628. - GIF files are binary, so geeker sets the file transfer type to binary by
  629.   typing "binary".
  630. - geeker types "get <filename>", where <filename> is the name of the file he
  631.   wants to copy.  In our case, he would type "get r-chan1.gif" to get the file.
  632.   Note that no wildcards are allowed.
  633. - Several other ftp commands to know:
  634.     "?" - lists the commands available
  635.     "quit" - exits the program
  636.     "ascii" - sets file transfer mode to ascii
  637.     "mget" - allows multiple-file gets, and wildcards
  638.  
  639. If you need help, or want to learn advanced techniques, DON'T post to
  640. rec.arts.anime for help.  Instead, ask your local system administrator / CCON
  641. / Unix witch doctor for help.  That's what they're paid for.

  647. - Sound files:  These are IFF "raw" sound files, which can be played on Amiga,
  648.   MS-DOS, Macintosh and Sun computers.  There is also a text file with

  652.   fanzines.  EAV is put out by Randall Stukey and the Anime Publications
